Credit Card Processing has seen a lot of changes in the last 20 years.  From merchants processing carbon copies on a knuckle buster to the newest and greatest EMV technology. But how did we get there?

Old vs New Credit Card Processing Technology
It has been a long journey a few bumps and bruises as well as advances in technology that hve made most electronic credit card processing equipment we use today smaller and faster and more surce.

It seems that security has been at the fore front of the majority of changes in merchant services so I will  keep this piece mostly focused on the events and the reactions in our industry and how this helped to shape where we are today.

First off we all know that swiping a carbon copied credit card on the old knuckle buster was probably never going to be considered ultra safe and secure but the thieves and scammers sped up the race to electronic transactions by rummaging thru garbage cans for the transaction carbon copies made duplicate numbers and there ya have it the rush to secure credit card payments was on. It was too easy really and it worked pretty well for years. But we have a segment of the population that is always thinking of how they can get something for little or no work at all.

The next generation led us to big bulky machines that dialed up into a phone line modem (yes remember that noise)? and it was slow but it didn't leave as easy of a target for scammers and we felt safe for a while. That technology eventually became smaller and faster and a bit more secure, but left our credit card info vulnerable as it was not encrypted and stored safe enough to keep a good hacker from breaking into the system and getting your card data and buying gifts for themselves and their loved ones.

That leads us up to today's systems. After major breaches at companies like Target and Michaels stores the US had a long look at what was working int he area of credit card processing security and turned to Euro Mastecard, Visa Technology or EMV. It seems our counterparts in Europe were utilizing credit cards with microchips embedded in them. This eliminated that vulnerable magnetic strip on the cards further encrypting your sensitive data.

This fall a self imposed industry date is set to upgrade all equipment  to be able to accept these embedded cards. Not upgrading your credit card processing equipment could possibly leave a business vulnerable and put them at risk of having to pay fines and fees if a security breach does occur.
